How Abortion Pill Reversal Works
The abortion pill is a two-drug regimen. The first drug, mifepristone, works by blocking progesterone, the hormone the body needs to support a continuing pregnancy.
Abortion pill reversal works by introducing progesterone back into the body to counteract the effects of mifepristone before the second drug is taken. When started in time, it may give the pregnancy a chance to continue.
Reversal is most effective when started within 24 hours of taking mifepristone, though it may still be an option up to 72 hours after. If you are unsure how much time has passed, reach out anyway.
How Effective Is APR?
Success is not guaranteed, but some studies report reversal rates of 64% to 68% when progesterone treatment is started within 24 to 72 hours of mifepristone.
The sooner treatment begins, the greater the likelihood that the pregnancy may continue.
Do not take the second abortion drug, misoprostol. Once misoprostol has been taken, abortion pill reversal is generally no longer considered effective because the abortion process has already begun.
Even if the second drug has already been taken, reach out to learn more about available options.
Is APR Safe?
Progesterone has been used in pregnancy care for more than 50 years and has been prescribed in some cases to help support pregnancy and reduce the risk of miscarriage.
If you have a peanut allergy, let your medical provider know, as some forms of progesterone may contain peanut oil. Alternative forms may be available.

Disclaimer
Abortion pill reversal has been shown in some studies to increase the likelihood that a pregnancy may continue after taking mifepristone. Current research has not shown an increased risk of birth defects associated with progesterone used in the APR process. However, outcomes vary, and success cannot be guaranteed in every case.
